Seasonal Alaskan Flavors

Description

In just under 4 hours, this experience offers an easygoing, thoughtful introduction to Alaska Native culture just outside downtown Ketchikan. The 3.75-hour tour is paced to feel comfortable and engaging, blending hands-on activities, local flavors, and guided storytelling without feeling rushed.

Your visit to Saxman Native Village begins with a short art workshop led by a local Native artist. You are introduced to Tlingit formline design, the visual style used in traditional totems and artwork. The artist walks you through each step, making the process simple and approachable, and you create a small ornament to keep. No prior art experience is required, and many guests are pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this session is.

Next comes the food experience. You will sit down for a three-course tasting prepared with local ingredients. Typical offerings may include reindeer sausage, smoked salmon dip, kelp pickles, and other seasonal selections, subject to availability. Alongside the food, you’ll enjoy a four-flight sampler of craft beer, wine, or non-alcoholic craft soda. The focus is on savoring the flavors at a relaxed pace.

A guided walk through the village follows, tying everything together. You’ll visit the totem park, carving center, and artifact displays while your guide shares insights into clan structures, traditions, and daily life. The explanations are clear and personal, making the cultural context easy to understand.

The experience concludes at the Beaver Clan House with live music and dances by local artists. The rhythm of the drums, the movement, and the setting leave a lasting impression and highlight the living nature of this culture today.
