Standing atop a vast, frozen expanse while surrounded by towering peaks and endless wilderness is an experience unlike any other, and the Juneau Icefield offers exactly that. As one of Alaska’s most iconic natural wonders, the icefield invites visitors into a realm of icy beauty and dynamic natural forces. During my visits on helicopter tours in both Skagway and Juneau, I was captivated by its vastness of the glacier, the mesmerizing blue ice, and the profound stillness of its landscape. Whether you're an adventurer looking for thrilling excursions or a nature lover seeking tranquility, the Juneau Icefield provides a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with Alaska's wild beauty.

The Juneau Icefield: What Makes It Special

The Juneau Icefield is a breathtaking frozen landscape that stretches over 1,500 square miles, making it one of the largest icefields in the Western Hemisphere. It is a remarkable natural wonder due to its sheer size and the fact that it feeds over 30 glaciers, including the well-known Mendenhall Glacier, Taku Glacier, and Lemon Creek Glacier. The icefield is not just a static mass; it's a dynamic entity, constantly shifting and changing due to natural forces. Imagine standing on a vast sheet of ice, surrounded by towering alpine vistas and pristine wilderness—it's an experience that leaves an indelible mark on your memory long after you leave. The icefield's striking blue ice, formed under immense pressure, and the intricate network of crevasses and seracs make it a geologist's dream.

Where is the Juneau Icefield?

The Juneau Icefield is located just north of Juneau, Alaska's capital city, nestled within the rugged Coast Mountains. Its remote location adds to its allure, providing a sense of untouched wilderness and adventure. Despite its seclusion, the icefield is surprisingly accessible for those eager to witness its icy splendor. The proximity to Juneau makes it a convenient yet extraordinary destination for travelers seeking a unique Alaskan experience.

The History of the Juneau Icefield

The Juneau Icefield spans over 1,500 square miles and holds a history as vast and captivating as its glacial landscapes. Carved by ancient forces over thousands of years, it is one of the largest icefields in North America, feeding more than 40 glaciers, including the iconic Mendenhall and Taku Glaciers. While its natural beauty has long fascinated explorers, the icefield became a hub for scientific study in the mid-20th century with the establishment of the Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) in 1946.

JIRP has drawn scientists, students, and researchers from around the world to study this dynamic and fragile environment. Through decades of fieldwork, the program has provided invaluable data on glacial dynamics, climate patterns, and environmental change, making the Juneau Icefield a living laboratory for understanding the effects of climate change on polar and alpine ice systems.

The icefield’s research legacy extends far beyond Alaska, contributing to global knowledge on glacier behavior, ice melt rates, and rising sea levels. This long-term data has helped scientists understand the connections between glaciers and the Earth’s climate system, placing the Juneau Icefield at the forefront of climate science.

The Juneau Icefield is both a majestic natural wonder and a critical scientific resource, reminding visitors and researchers alike of the beauty—and fragility—of the frozen landscapes that make visitng Alaska so incredible.

Visiting the Juneau Icefield Today

When to Visit the Juneau Icefield

The best time to visit the Juneau Icefield is during the summer months, from May to August. While it can be cloudier in May & June, preventing some helicopter tours, these months avoid the Catabatic winds that can prevent approaching the glaciers from the water for a view of the face. Later in hte summer, milder weather is ideal for exploring the glaciers via helicopter. The summer sun illuminates the ice (on the days when you don't get characteristic Juneau winds), creating a dazzling display of light and shadow, and the crisp air invigorates the senses. I visited in May, and the experience was nothing short of magical, with rare sunny days leading to the light glistening off the ice and the air crisp with the scent of the surrounding wilderness.

What You'll See When You Arrive at the Juneau Icefield

If you land by helicopter on the Juneau Icefield, you'll be greeted by a mesmerizing landscape of ice formations, deep crevasses, and the striking blue hues of the glaciers. It's a landscape that seems otherworldly, a testament to the raw power and beauty of nature. I was captivated by the intricate patterns carved into the ice by wind and water, the crevasses and fresh icy water were stunning, and refreshing when I dunked my head! If you approach by water, you'll see the vastness of the glacier rise above you, and perhaps catch a rare calving of the blue ice into the water.
