Our Local Expert's Guide to Hiking in Skagway

Growing up in Alaska, I spent a lot of time hiking in the mountains and loved being surrounded by all the natural beauty.  When I moved to Skagway for a summer, I wanted to hit as many trails as I could! The town, located at the northernmost point of the Inside Passage, offers hiking opportunities that reveal the beauty of the Last Frontier. With my hiking boots laced up, I set out to discover the trails that make this area a hiker's paradise.

Yakutania Point & Smuggler’s Cove (Easy)

I started my hiking adventure with the Yakutania Point and Smuggler's Cove trail. This is probably the most easily accessible trail in Skagway as it’s located close to the cruise ship docks. This was a relatively easy hike but offered some of the most stunning coastal views I have ever seen. As I walked along the rocky outcrop, the Lynn Canal stretched out before me, with its blue waters contrasting against the mountain peaks. The sight was spectacular, and I often spent hours just sitting and soaking in the landscape.

Goldrush Cemetery & Lower Reid Falls (Easy)

The Lower Reid Falls hike in Skagway, Alaska, is a popular hike that offers an easy yet rewarding adventure for nature lovers. Tucked behind the historic Gold Rush Cemetery, this short trail leads you through the forest to a stunning cascade of water plunging over mossy cliffs. The soothing sound of the rushing falls and the serene surroundings make it an ideal spot for a peaceful escape or a quick detour during your exploration of Skagway. Icy Lake & Upper Reid Falls (Moderate)

If you want to see more waterfalls, the Icy Lake and Upper Reid Falls hike is an adventure that showcases the area's diverse natural beauty. This moderate trail takes you through dense forests, across babbling streams, and past moss-covered rocks, offering a serene journey into the Alaskan wilderness. Along the way, you'll encounter Icy Lake, a tranquil body of water surrounded by towering peaks, perfect for a reflective pause. The trail continues to Upper Reid Falls, where cascading waters create a breathtaking spectacle nestled in the forest. Ideal for hikers seeking a peaceful escape with unforgettable views, this hike is a must-do for exploring Skagway’s rugged charm.

Sturgill’s Landing (Moderate)

Sturgill’s Landing hike is a scenic coastal trail perfect for adventurers seeking a mix of history and natural beauty. Beginning near the cruise ship docks, this moderate trek winds through temperate forests, past rugged cliffs, and along the shoreline of Lynn Canal. With sweeping views of the glacial waters and surrounding mountains, the hike offers ample opportunities for photography and wildlife spotting. The trail ends at a peaceful cove, where you can relax and take in the tranquil beauty of this hidden retreat. 

Lower Dewey Lake (Moderate)

If you’re looking for a shorter but still rewarding hike, the Lower Dewey Lake Trail is a real treasure. Just a few minutes from downtown Skagway, the trail quickly takes you into the heart of nature. While the trail does ascend quickly, as you make your way through the forest, the sounds of town disappear, replaced by the calming rustle of leaves and the chatter of birds. When I reached Dewey Lake, I couldn’t help but pause and take it all in. The stillness of the water, reflecting the surrounding peaks, created the perfect setting for a peaceful moment to just soak in the beauty.

Upper Dewey Lake & Devil’s Punchbowl (Difficult)

If you’re up for a challenge and some incredible views, the Upper Dewey Lake and Devil’s Punchbowl hikes in Skagway, Alaska, are hard to beat. The trail to Upper Dewey Lake takes you on a steep climb through lush forests, but the effort is worth it when you reach the crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by towering peaks. For those who want to push a little further, the hike to Devil’s Punchbowl offers a chance to see a dramatic glacial tarn in a truly remote and beautiful setting. These trails are perfect for experienced hikers who want to soak in the rugged, untouched beauty of Alaska and enjoy a peaceful escape into nature.

Chilkoot Trail (Difficult)

No Skagway hiking guide is complete without mentioning the famous Chilkoot Trail! The Chilkoot Trail, starting in Skagway, is a historic and challenging hike that offers adventurers a chance to walk in the footsteps of Gold Rush prospectors. Spanning 33 miles, this iconic trail takes you through diverse landscapes, from temperate rainforests and alpine meadows to rocky mountain passes. Along the way, you’ll encounter relics of the past, such as old campsites and rusting equipment, which serve as reminders of the trail’s rich history. The infamous Golden Stairs section, with its steep ascent, is both a test of endurance and a highlight for many hikers. Whether you’re tackling the full trail or exploring shorter sections, the Chilkoot offers a unique blend of natural beauty and fascinating history, making it a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts.
